How to Make Your Eyelash Extensions Last 2x Longer
No time for frequent salon trips? Discover how to make your eyelash extensions last 2x longer with minimal effort.
Is this you? Your lash appointment just ended, you hop off the lash bed with a fresh classic full set or mega volume lashes and instantly become That Girl. Confidence? Sky high. To-do list? About to be crushed. Walk? There’s a little extra hip sway and you know exactly why. Those gorgeous lash extensions are doing what they’re supposed to do. Yes, I see you, girl.
We all know this feeling of instant euphoria that comes over us after a lash appointment. And, no matter the lash look that you prefer, classic vs hybrid lashes or natural wispy lashes, or maybe fluffy lashes are your vibe, it’s safe to say that you enjoy how lash extensions enhance your beauty.
Then…This Happens…
Now, let’s fast-forward 2 weeks. Your lashes are starting to look less luxury set and more what happened here? Womp womp.
But what if I told you there are a few lash-care secrets most artists don’t fully explain. There are simple habits that help your lash extensions stay fuller, longer. Listen, no matter your style (wispy, hybrid or classic with bottom lashes), these easy tweaks can seriously upgrade your retention.
Every busy mom needs to keep these tips in her back pocket. Why? Because when you care for your lash extensions the right way, you’re stretching fills to every three weeks instead of two, which saves time, money, and a whole lot of frustration. Yep, that sounds like a win to me.
Here’s the deal: The key to longer-lasting lash extensions is knowing what to avoid at the beginning and what to consistently do throughout your wear.
:( Habits to Avoid
Excessive touching, rubbing, or pulling on your lashes can cause premature shedding.
Avoid water for the first 24 hours
Water weakens lash adhesive before it fully cures. Getting your lashes wet too soon can cause lash extensions to loosen and shed prematurely. Pro Tip: During the first 24 hours of your lash appointment, the glue is still curing, so also avoid steam around your face. Take a warm shower and don’t stand directly in the water.
Avoid heavy eye creams
Rich creams migrate into the lash line, weakening the adhesive and causing lashes to shed faster.
Avoid oil-based and alcohol-based products
Oil breaks down lash glue. Always use oil-free, alcohol-free makeup removers to prevent extensions from slipping off early.
Don’t use mascara on lash extensions
Mascara causes clumping, adds unnecessary weight, and is difficult to remove without tugging, all of which shorten the life of your lashes.
Avoid cotton pads
Cotton fibers snag on lash extensions, pulling them loose and causing unnecessary fallout.
Don’t use lash curlers
Extensions are already curled. Lash curlers can bend, damage, or snap them right off.
Don’t cover your eyes while sleeping
Eye masks can create friction. I learned this the hard way. One night, years ago, after getting lash extensions, I decided to use a concave eye cover, or 3D contoured sleep mask. Unfortunately, my eye covers held more of my extensions by morning than my eyes did. Trust me, it’s a big no-no.
:) What You Should Do
Sleep on your back when possible
Sleeping face-down presses lashes against your pillow, causing friction and breakage. Back sleeping helps them keep their shape longer.
Sleep on a satin pillowcase
If you try sleeping on your back, and you just can’t commit, sleeping on your side may be a lash extension-safe alternative. If so, opt for a satin pillowcase. Cotton creates friction and pulls at lashes. Satin is smoother, reducing breakage. Plus, satin is better for your skin and hair, too.
Gently clean and comb your lashes regularly
Clean your lash extensions regularly to prevent oil buildup and bacteria. Gently brush them each day to keep them separated and aligned. Both habits help extend wear time. Also, if you need to dry them after cleansing, gently pat them with a lint-free towel instead of rubbing.
Use an eyelash sealant
Sealants protect the adhesive from oil, humidity, and debris, helping lash extensions stay intact longer. Essentially, sealants are a top coat for your new lash extensions. Curacoro Eyelash Coating Sealant is a great choice. I use it on my clients, who see favorable results. Click here to get yours.
Remove makeup carefully
Wash makeup away from the face first, then gently clean around the eye. Avoid rubbing or tugging near the lash line.
All in all, lash extensions are an investment and with the right care, they can last beautifully between fills. Small habit changes make a big difference.
